In an article in today's newspaper, the predicted renaissance of the historic area Springfield just didn't take off. There were builders who built beautiful homes (and they really are cool, with the detached garages of typical homes of decades back) just a few doors from run-down and/or vacant properties. Two and three years ago lots of younger couples and singles were looking at fix-up homes there - and alot of them needed to be razed really but the historic factor was so appealing. Now prices make fixing them up not an option - the paper mentioned a rundown store on the market for over a million dollars! Who can buy that and fix it up?
So the boom bypassed Springfield - the few restaurants who have tried to make it a "cool" spot, thinking it would become San Marco or Five Points, have gone out, gone under or just gone. Too Bad!
